Introduction

I've always been drawn to the ocean. It's been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, whether it was swimming in the cold Irish Sea as a child, braving the waves of the Atlantic, or now, in Australia, where the beach is my second home.

There's something about the salty air, the rhythmic crashing of waves, and the vastness of the ocean that has always given me a sense of peace. It's my reset button-where I go to clear my head, reconnect, and simply be.

But beyond the mental clarity and joy the ocean gives me, l've always been deeply curious about what lies beneath its surface. Watching whales and dolphins glide effortlessly through the water, I often think about the hidden world below, a world we still know so little about yet depend on so much. It wasn't until I came across Salty Sharks that I truly began to understand the urgent need to protect it.

Discovering Salty Sharks

When I first learned about Salty Sharks, I was instantly intrigued. Their mission - to educate and inspire people about marine conservation through immersive, interactive experiences resonated with me on so many levels. I had to know more.

Founded by Robert Keanalley, Salty Sharks isn't just about learning facts, it’s about experiencing the ocean in a way that makes you feel its importance. The Saltyverse is an extraordinary immersive world where students can dive into marine ecosystems, not just read about them.

What's even better is that these experiences are accessible to all, there's no need for expensive VR headsets. They can be accessed straight from a regular browser, making them easy for teachers to implement in any classroom. Of course, if schools have access to VR goggles, they add an extra layer of immersion, but they're not a requirement for students to explore and engage with these learning environments.

And it's not just exciting for students, it's exciting for teachers too! I've seen it with my own eyes, watching students faces light up with excitement as they explore these virtual worlds. This is way more engaging than just textbooks and worksheets,it's about making learning come alive.

The more I learned, the more I realised how little Ocean Conservation Education is prioritised in schools. The ocean covers over 70% of our planet, produces more than half the oxygen we breathe, and regulates global temperatures, yet, most students go through their education with barely any real understanding of its importance.

This is more than a saying, it's a reality. When the Ocean suffers so do we. Protecting it isn't just about marine life, it's about our future and future generations to come.

Climate change is having a devastating impact on our oceans, warmer waters, coral bleaching, and rising sea levels are disrupting marine ecosystems at an alarming rate.

Increased carbon dioxide levels are leading to ocean acidification, affecting marine life-especially those with calcium carbonate shells and skeletons. These changes threaten entire food chains, including the very seafood industries and coastal communities that so many rely on.

Without this knowledge, how can we expect future generations to care enough to protect it? This is why I believe marine conservation education should be a core part of school curriculums. Not an optional extra. Not something left to occasional nature

documentaries or once a year school projects. It should be embedded in what students learn because their future depends on it.

Shifting Perceptions: The Great White Shark Exhibit

One of the most exciting things coming to the Saltyverse is the Great White Shark Exhibit. If you hear "great white shark" and instantly picture a terrifying, man-eating predator thanks to movies like Jaws, you're not alone.

The media has done an incredible job of making these creatures the villains of the ocean. But the truth is, great white sharks are vital to marine ecosystems. As apex predators, they help keep ocean populations balanced, preventing certain species from overpopulating and disrupting the entire ecosystem.

Without them, the delicate chain of marine life could collapse. But because of their fearsome reputation, great whites are often hunted or culled unnecessarily, putting their populations at risk.
